This Advent, Exodus men from all around the world are turning towards the East, ad orientem. We recall the coming of the Christ Child in Bethlehem at Christmas and await his second coming at the end of time.
"O Oriens," which literally means "O East," is the fifth of the ancient "O Antiphon" prayers. They are prayed from December 17 to December 23 during Evening Prayer and focus upon titles for the coming Messiah.
Latin: O Oriens, splendor lucis aeternae, et sol iustitiae: veni, et illuminare sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis.
Meaning: "O Rising Dawn, splendor of eternal light, and sun of justice: come, and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death."
